Chronic Testicular Pain

Chronic testicular pain, or pain in the testicles lasting longer than 6 months, can be embarrassing to talk about. It can limit activities that men enjoy and create social and physical barriers. Chronic testicular pain can be difficult to treat and many men give up hope that their pain can be treated and end up learning to “just live with it”.

There are many causes of chronic testicular pain. These include pain following hernia repairs, infections in the testicle, trauma to testicles, previous surgeries, or vasectomies. Men often try multiple therapies to treat their pain including antibiotics, medications, such as ibuprofen, and/or hot packs. They are told to use alternative medicine such as yoga and meditation. When those fail, they are often told that they will have to learn how to live with the pain. However, there is an alternative to just living with it.

Microsurgical Denervation of the Spermatic cord is a technique that blocks the pain from the testicle and is highly successful in treating chronic testicular pain. The physiologic function of the testicle, as well as fertility, can be preserved, making this an excellent treatment for younger and older men alike. The procedure is performed using a state-of-the-art microsurgical technique in which Dr. Nelson and the physicians at Western Wisconsin Urology are very experienced. This minimally invasive technique is done as an outpatient, where the patient goes home the same day. Given the experience of the physicians, there is less pain and quicker recovery, with most men returning to normal activities within a few days to a week.
